David Lareau's Past Projects
During my teens, I have done several projects that helped me grow toward what I have become. Of course, I am still learning everyday, and even faster. Anyway, the following are theses teenage projects. I wish I had done more, listing them make me realize how few there are. Unfortunatly some were lost, so no pictures are available. I won't share any of the binaries because most of these don't even work anymore, could be buggy, or stole some resources from others :)
Pong (Winter 2001)
I've learned Java by doing this project. I heard Java was cool, so I jumped in this during Christmas holidays. What astonished me the most, I think, was that I finished the project very fast. I believe it took a week, though dates in the code show it took 2 days. But the best were the sounds effects done with my mouth. Sadly, I stole Preston Manning (Canadian politician) face to act as the Pong Master and framed him in a Bloonet fashion.

Magic Number (Summer 1999)
Magic Number was created the 16 of August 1999. In this exciting game you can choose one of four characters to battle against Random Joe, Binary Jack and Risky Bob in a one-of-a-kind combat to find the magic number! Prepare to fight!!!!
It's basicly the same as Magic Number 2002, but with cheesy pixel per pixel made portraits. I learned much about files in this projects.

Wicked similarity with Magic Number 2002.

There was a version I did in Java as an applet. It terribly sucked because the original cast was missing. Instead, it was artists I liked fighting against each other.
Bob VS Bob (1995)
The one that started it all. Bob VS Bob 1 was pathetic. Two stick man watching each other. You pressed 's', the left guy won. You pressed 'l', the guy on the right wins. The left guy was Killer Bob and had a spiky helmet. The guy on the right, Magic Bob (later Peace Bob) was just a bald stick dude. The code & the binary were lost forever.
Bob VS Bob 2 (1996)
This one introduced a new character: Radioactive Bob. Peace Bob was missing. I don't remember it very much. The graphics were better (no stick man), but the game play was the same. It saddens my heart greatly to learn that I have also lost this gem. I thought I had it somewhere, but it appears differently. Oh well, it sucked as a game anyway. Fortunatly, I've started dating my projects and doing backups the next year.
Bob VS Bob 3: The Armageddon (Winter 1997)
This game was a blast. Peace Bob return was unexpected. He had long blond hair and a peg-leg. Killer Bob was meaner than ever. What truly helped the serie was that you now had 5 energy points, different attacks and blocking moves. Each time a Bob attacked, he would make a distinctive signal before so that the other could think of a possible block. For exemple, if Killer Bob drawed his pistol, Peace Bob had about 1 second to raise his magical shield, but if he ducked instead, he'd get a head shot. If you made all bleeding moves in the right order, you could get the rewarding message "Blood Bath" when you won. My english was very basic in those days.![]() |

DirectX TicTacToe (Spring 2001)
This was my first attempt with DirectX, and it ended up being the only attempt so far. With this experience, the need for a high level graphic API similar to Java in C++ emerge in me, thus I made one and made Magic Number 2002 linked with OpenGL as the low level API. Again, I've stolen images from the net so this game is kinda tainted. One is an image of Pac-Man, and the other is a anime girl which I don't know the source. I unfortunatly think it's from an adult anime, so it sucks even more. Also, I've stolen some samples for sound effects. One is of Ruby, my teenage-time favorite band, and the other sample is a Counter-Stike head shot sound.

Windowed RPG (Winter 2000)
I am most sad of having lost both the code and binaries for this project. I was introducing myself to Microsoft Foundation Class. Silly me, I barely understood object oriented programming in those days. It was really cool though, and it worked fine. I could save the progress of the game and all. It was somewhat like a single player version of Legend of the Red Dragon, a door game for BBS. Because there was so much ennemy to draw, I decided to steal some images from a toy store on the net. For exemple, the Evil Snowman was portrayed as a Yeti figurine. I aslo remember putting my cruch actress of the time Madchen Amick (Twin Peaks) as a maid at the inn.
TI-82 Projects (Spring 1999)
I have done two games on the TI-82 calculator. It's insane how I can't even read the code because it makes no sens to me anymore! The games were Bob VS Bob Calculator & Ninja.
Bob VS Bob was only peace bob (bad guy) attacking killer bob (good guy) randomly. You could block peace bob attacks, or lauch your own. He would randomly block or get hit. Both character had 5 hit points. I remember a friend playing it very seriously to get a perfect. He succeeded once, but he was all wet in sweet.
Ninja was different. Two characters were facing each other. Both had a stamina line and a health line. You could punch or kick. Attacking took stamina away, but damaged both energy and stamina of your opponent. The power of your attacks was proportional to your remaining stamina, and stamina would regenerate over time. To win, you had to completly deplete your opponent health bar, and the two thirst of his stamina bar. It was funny, because kicks were taking away more health, but costed too much stamina, so I was only using punches, except for the fatal kick.
